Why Do You Need Help?

There are thousands of baseball players in the NCAA transfer portal.

These are thousands of players who didn’t get the recruiting process right the first time.

Now they’re having to start over. What a headache!

There’s so much conflicting advice and information about the college baseball recruiting process.

Sifting through it all can be overwhelming.

Have you heard any of the following?

  • If you’re good enough, college coaches will find you.

  • Your high school and club coaches will handle recruiting for you.

  • You need to attend big showcases and tournaments to attract attention.

  • You need to pick colleges you like and go to their camps.

  • You can navigate the recruiting process on our own.

These statements are misleading at best and totally false at worst.

Let’s dissect them one by one:

If you’re good enough, college coaches will find you.

This is VERY misleading.

It is true that you’re likely to attract some attention from college coaches if you’re a good player.

BUT…

Simply being a good player doesn’t guarantee the school that’s YOUR BEST FIT will find you.

There are 1700 (give or take) college baseball programs in the country.

How many could you name off the top of your head?

100? 200? 300?

Even if you could name 400 college baseball programs off the top of your head (doubtful), that leaves 1300 you know nothing about!

Do you think that 1 or 2 (or 50) of those schools COULD be a good fit for you?

Absolutely!

Waiting for college coaches to come to you will only guarantee one thing:

Schools that COULD be your best fit will fall through the cracks.

It’s a losing strategy.

Your high school and club coaches will handle recruiting for you.

Once again, this is VERY misleading.

Your high school and club coaches CAN and SHOULD help you, BUT…

They don’t have time to give you the help you need.

It’s not their fault. They wear so many (too many) hats:

  • Player development

  • Team development

  • Discipline

  • Scheduling

  • Fundraising

  • Field maintenance

  • Etc.

With all this on their plate, how will they give you the time and attention you need to navigate the recruiting process THE RIGHT WAY?

You need to attend big showcases and tournaments to attract attention.

I sense a pattern developing…

This statement is VERY misleading.

CAN you attract attention at big showcases and tournaments?

Yes.

Should you RELY on attracting attention at big showcases and tournaments?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Visualize this scenario:

You’re playing at a big tournament at a huge complex with a bunch of fields.

You’re walking up to the field to get ready for your first game of the tournament.

You see A LOT of college coaches and scouts walking around.

You get excited!

This is your chance!

The first inning plays out perfectly!

You come up with the bases loaded!

You work the count to 3-1.

You get the middle-in fastball you’re expecting!

You put a GREAT swing on it!

You can barely feel contact!

The ball explodes off your bat!

You see it sailing deep to left-center!

You sprint hard out of the box, but you know it’s gone!

The smile on your first-base coach’s face confirms it!

GRAND SLAM!

You round the bases, celebrate with your teammates, and take a glace into the stands while walking back to the dugout.

You see your parents and your teammates’ parents cheering, BUT…

NO SCOUTS?

It turns out that all the college coaches and scouts were at a different field, watching a matchup between two premier pitching prospects.

Nobody saw your big moment.

See how playing in tournaments is a crapshoot?

What about showcases?

CAN you get noticed at a showcase?

Absolutely, but what if you have a bad day?

Here’s what a typical showcase experience looks like:

  • LOTS of standing around

  • 1-2 60-yard-dash reps

  • 5-10 reps at your position

  • 10 batting practice swings

  • 15-20 bullpen pitches (for pitchers)

  • MORE standing around

You get limited reps to showcase your talent.

Even if you do perform well, will you stick out amongst 100+ players?

Probably not!

I’m not saying you should NEVER go to a showcase (I recommend specific showcases to my players).

But putting all your eggs in the showcase basket is a losing strategy.

You need to pick colleges you like and go to their camps.

You know what’s coming!

This is VERY misleading.

I call this the “hope and pray” recruiting strategy:

Go to a bunch of camps and “hope and pray” that at least one program recruits you.

I ONLY recommend camps if:

  • You have the ability to play at the level of the program hosting the camp

  • The program needs your position for your grad class

  • You’ve received positive feedback from the coaching staff about your skillset

How do you figure these things out?

Keep reading…A solution is coming!

You can navigate the recruiting process on our own.

This is NOT misleading!

This is absolutely TRUE!

You CAN try to navigate the recruiting process on your own.

You can try to do almost anything on your own.

  • Buy/sell a house

  • File taxes

  • Change the oil in your car

  • Fix the furnace

  • Teach yourself to hit/pitch

  • Etc.

But why would you want to?

The recruiting process is just as (or more) complicated than everything I listed above.

Finding your best fit for playing college baseball (and college in general) is too important to do on your own.

Why not hire an EXPERT who:

  • Helps players with the recruiting process full-time

  • Knows the process inside and out

  • Saves you money

  • Saves you time and effort

  • Keeps you from making mistakes

  • Etc.

So who is this program for exactly?

This program is for high school baseball players and their parents who fall into one or more of these categories:

  • You have an INTENSE desire to play college baseball.

  • You don’t how to get started with the college baseball recruiting process.

  • You don’t know WHEN to get started with the recruiting process.

  • You don’t know what level or levels of college baseball fit your skillset.

  • You don’t know what factors you need to consider to find your best fit for playing college baseball.

  • You don’t know what videos college coaches want to see.

  • You don’t know how to film a skills video.

  • You don’t know how to capture good game footage video.

  • You don’t want to hassle with creating videos for college coaches.

  • You don’t know how to “get your name out there” and promote yourself to college coaches.

  • You’re not getting the interest from college coaches you think you deserve.

  • You don’t know what questions to ask college coaches.

  • You don’t know how to leverage social media to promote yourself.

  • As a parent, you think your son will benefit from hearing advice from someone other than you.

  • You aren’t sure how to communicate with college coaches effectively.

  • You don’t know how to compare and contrast colleges to determine which best fit you.

  • You could benefit from an EXPERT who will advise, coach, and mentor you through the entire recruiting process until you set foot on a college campus.

Who Is This Guy?

I’m just a guy who sucked at the college baseball recruiting process, and I want to help you avoid sucking too!

The biggest mistake I made: I only considered three schools.

Like most high school players, I wanted to play D1 baseball.

The problem: I wasn't good enough!

I looked at three D3 schools and end up choosing the school that recruited me least.

Why? Because one of my high school coaches played there.

Luckily, I had a good baseball experience at the school I chose. I improved, played a lot, and helped turn around a struggling program.

But I didn't have a good social experience.

Had I considered more colleges (casted a wider net), maybe I would have found a better OVERALL fit.

Hi! I’m Matt.

I’m a former college head baseball coach.

Now I help high school players find their best fit for playing college baseball.

As a college coach, I LOVED recruiting! AND I was good at it.

So when I decided to leave college coaching, I JUMPED at the opportunity to focus solely on recruiting.

I utilize the online platform and recruiting process invented by Mike Orchard and his company, College Athlete Advantage.

Why CAA?

Because CAA was the company I trusted the most as a college coach.

If I received an email from a CAA player, I opened it (this wasn’t the case for emails from other recruiting companies).

Why did I open it?

Because I knew the player would be a good fit.

CAA isn’t a spam email service.

Our systematic process matches players with colleges that are likely to be a good fit, THEN we promote the players to the coaches at those schools.

My expertise and passion about the college baseball recruiting process and CAA’s platform and process are a perfect match.

In two years with CAA:

  • I worked with more than 80 players from all over the country.

  • I helped players find opportunities at all levels of college baseball: D1/D2/D3/NAIA/JC.

  • I’ve helped players find opportunities all over the country.

  • I’ve saved players and families thousands of dollars.

  • My players have earned a lot of scholarship money to help offset school costs.

  • I’ve helped players negotiate for better scholarship offers.

  • I saved players and parents countless hours.

  • and MUCH MORE!

What’s In It For You?

Here’s EXACTLY what you will get from the time you sign up until the day you set foot on on a college campus:

  • Unlimited access to an expert in the college baseball recruiting process for answers to ALL your questions.

  • Access to CAA’s one-stop-shop recruiting platform to keep your information and videos updated, search and research any college baseball program in the country, track your communication with college coaches, see which coaches are viewing your profile, and more.

  • A professional-looking online profile with all the information that college coaches want to see (desktop and mobile friendly).

  • A detailed evaluation from at least five former college baseball coaches detailing your strengths as a player, areas for improvement, and the level(s) of college baseball that fit YOU best.

  • A “Values List” exercise to help you determine which factors (athletic, academic, and otherwise) are the MOST important for YOU as you’re searching for your perfect fit.

  • Promotion to college coaches that match your evaluation and values list in multiple ways: company emails, personal emails, advisor emails, social media, advisor contacts, the nationwide CAA network of college coach contacts, and the CAA website.

  • Advice on which camps and showcases are worth your time and money and which are not.

  • Help crafting appropriate responses to messages from college coaches.

  • Advice on what questions to ask college coaches during phone calls and campus visits.

  • Coaching on how to compare colleges to determine which is your best overall fit.

  • Help determining how much LEGITIMATE interest a college coach has in you.

  • Coaching on how to leverage offers to make sure you get THE BEST possible deal.

  • A how-to guide for capturing and editing game footage and skill videos for college coaches to view.

  • Social media promotion.

  • Education about the recruiting process, differences between levels, recruiting rules, and much more.

In a nutshell, you will receive EVERYTHING you need to maximize your options for playing college baseball, narrowing those options to your top schools, and ultimately finding YOUR best overall fit for playing in at the next level.

What Does the Process Look Like?

Here is the EXACT process I will guide you through to find your best fit for playing college baseball:

Step 1 - Create an Online Baseball Profile

Using CAA’s intuitive online platform, you will fill out a series of online forms so we can gather all the information college coaches will want to see (and ONLY the information that coaches want to see…no fluff).

This includes:

  • Personal Information

  • Skills Videos

  • Game Footage

  • Metrics

  • Varsity Stats

  • Academic Information

  • References

  • Schedules

You will easily be able to edit this information as you grow and improve throughout your recruiting journey.

The CAA platform contains text and videos to walk you through this process step-by-step, but I will be available for any questions you have.

Step 2 - Evaluation of Skills/Metrics

Once your profile is complete, AT LEAST five CAA advisors (all former college coaches) will evaluate your videos. You will receive feedback about your strengths and areas of improvement in a number of areas.

We evaluate the following for pitchers:

  • Velocity

  • Change-Up

  • Breaking Ball

  • Pitchability

  • Performance

  • Size

  • Mechanics

  • Movement/Life

  • Command

And for position players:

  • Hitting for Average

  • Hitting for Power

  • Arm Strength

  • Defense

  • Speed

  • Performance

  • Size

You will receive a 1-8 ranking from each advisor for each category and an average ranking for each category.

Essentially we are evaluating your “skill” and “metrics/stats” to ultimately project the level or levels of college baseball that fit YOU best.

A parent of one of our players told us that our evaluation alone is worth $500!

What you SHOULD NOT expect in the evaluation:

SUGARCOATING!

I’m not going to tear you down, but I AM going to be honest. If you’re not a D1 prospect, the evaluation will make this clear (along with the reasons why).

This is how we build credibility with our players and parents AND college coaches throughout the country. Coaches know we aren’t going to promote players to them who are way below their level.

The evaluation typically takes a week, then I will meet with you to answer any questions you have. During this meeting, I will also guide you through the next step:

Step 3 - What “Values” Are the Most Important?

After answering any questions about the evaluation, I will guide you through a “Values List” exercise to help you determine which factors are the MOST important for YOU as you’re searching for your best fit for playing college baseball.

The “values” cover both athletic AND non-athletic categories:

  • Development

  • Academics

  • Playing Time

  • Campus Life

  • Etc.

This is a critical part of the process because your values will indicate which schools are likely the best fit.

Imagine two players who have equal metrics and skills coming out of high school. Both players want to play college baseball.

Player A wants to be a brain surgeon. The quality of the pre-med program is his top priority.

Player B wants to play professional baseball. Athletic development is his top priority.

Although they have equal ability, different colleges will be the best fit for each player.

The COMBINATION of your evaluation and values list will help us work together target the CORRECT schools FOR YOU!

Step 4 - Determine Target Schools

Next, you’ll make a “favorites” list including as many colleges as possible that COULD be a good fit based on your evaluation and values list.

It’s CRITICAL to cast a wide net to make sure schools don’t fall through the cracks.

Your personal CAA dashboard will include a “College Search” tool, enabling you to filter and research any college baseball program in the country easily and quickly.

You can filter schools by:

  • State

  • Region

  • Distance from home

  • Size

  • Etc.

See a school you like? Then click the “Add To Favorite” button to add the school to your list of target schools.

Once we get your target schools squared away, the real FUN begins!

Step 5 - Promotion to Target Schools

The next step is getting your information in front of college coaches to determine who has interest.

This step is all of the following:

  • Exciting

  • Confusing

  • Disappointing

It’s exciting when coaches express legitimate interest.

It’s confusing when coaches respond to your messages, but don’t give a clear answer about their interest level.

It’s disappointing when coaches say they’re not interested.

It’s important to expect to hear “no” a lot. Here’s the mindset you need:

Luckily, I will be there for you to help you through ALL these emotions!

We promote our players (and teach you to promote yourself) in a variety of ways:

  • Introductory Emails (sent through our online platform)

  • Personal Emails (sent from your personal email address)

  • Social Media (click here for an article I wrote about best practices for promoting yourself through social media).

  • Advisor Contacts (ME reaching out to coaches for you)

  • CAA Network (ME using my own network of college coach connections AND the networks of our other advisors to help YOU increase your options)

  • CAA Website (we post your information on our website, which is free for college coaches to view)

I will coach you through ALL of these promotion strategies to make sure we’re on the right track to maximizing your options for playing in college).

Step 6 - Narrow Your Options

As I mentioned above, casting a wide net INITIALLY is a great strategy.

But KEEPING a wide net is difficult.

We want to narrow your options fairly quickly so you can can take a deep dive into just a handful of schools.

Here’s how the process works:

  • Introduce yourself to 100+ schools that COULD be a good fit.

  • Narrow the list quickly to ONLY the schools who express interest.

  • Narrow the list further to the schools that show the MOST interest.

  • Narrow the list further to the schools YOU are most interested in (probably no more than 5 schools)

  • Take a deep dive with your research into your top schools.

This process could take anywhere from several years (if you’re starting really early) to 1-2 months (if you’re starting really late).

The best part:

I will be with you every step of the way to advise you through the process, help you compare schools, and answer ANY questions that arise.

Step 7 - Commit to YOUR Best Fit!

The final step is the easiest (and the most FUN)!

If you work hard (with my help) at the process I’ve outlined above, you’ll have A LOT of confidence that the school you commit to IS truly your best fit.

Then all that’s left to do is call the head coach and offer your commitment!

This is a fun conversation!

Is There a Guarantee?

There’s only ONE guarantee:

I will work as hard as I can to HELP you find your best fit for playing college baseball.

I WISH I could guarantee a full scholarship to your dream school!

But I can’t. Nobody can. We wary of anyone who says otherwise.

I can’t force college coaches to recruit you, but here’s what I CAN help you find out if a scholarship to your dream school is even a remote possibility.

If it’s not, then I will help you find your BEST FIT for playing college baseball (using the process detailed above).

NOTE: For the overwhelming majority of college baseball players, their best fit is NOT their dream school.

If you need some confidence, here’s some experiences from previous players/parents:

What Are the Next Steps?

Ready to get going?!

The next step is to schedule a meeting with me. Click here to schedule a meeting.

Why a meeting? Why can’t you sign up right now?

Because I DON’T WORK WITH EVERYONE! I have a limited number of players I can work with.

I need to make sure you’re a good fit for me JUST as much as you need to make sure I’m a good fit for you.
