How We Promote Players to College Coaches
Before I get started, I want to let you know that for a limited time I’m offering FREE player evaluations for anyone who hasn’t received a CAA evaluation in the past.
This evaluation isn’t as extensive as the one we offer for our clients, but will still give players great feedback about their strengths, weaknesses, and which levels of college baseball are currently the best fit
If you’re interested, please reply to this email or text 319-883-0242 and I will get back to you with more details.
There are two ways to to approach the recruiting process:
Reactive
Proactive
The reactive approach is passive. It involves sitting back and waiting for coaches to come to you.
The proactive approach is aggressive. It involves reaching out to college coaches and marketing yourself.
As one who values humility, I understand the reactive approach:
You don’t want to brag about yourself to the world
You want your skillset and accomplishment to speak for themselves
You don’t want to appear arrogant or overconfident
However, I suggest reframing how you look at the recruiting process:
You’re not bragging, you’re showing the value you can provide college coaches
Unless your skillset is in the top 5%, it will blend in with all the other players wanting to play and it WON’T stick out.
Thinking that your skillset is SO elite that it will stick out on its own is a more arrogant attitude
At College Athlete Advantage, we take a proactive approach.
We employ seven strategies for promoting players to college coaches.
Company Emails
We are able to send emails to college coaches through our one-stop-shop recruiting platform.
This is typically our first step for introducing players to college coaches.
I know what you’re thinking:
Oh no! Not another spam email service!
While the content of these emails is general, we are not a spam email service because we ONLY send to programs that we’ve already identified as a possible fit for the player (we don’t send them to every coach in the country).
We use this strategy because it works!
Here’s are open rates for some company emails I sent out a while back:
Notice the open rates are close to or above 50%.
To go a step further, we are able to track which coaches actually click on the profile link.
In the following screenshot, the column on the left indicates the coach opened the email and the column on the right indicates the coach clicked on the profile.
So this is evidence that this method has value (even though the information is not specific to the school).
Personal Emails
Although our company emails are effective, many coaches prefer receiving more personalized emails.
We have our players send personal emails to the coaches that didn’t respond to the company email.
This give the coach a second chance to click on the profile, watch the player’s videos, and respond.
We provide coaching and templates for players to use to construct these emails.
Here’s an example:
Coaches,
My name is John Smith. I’m a 2025 RHP from XYZ in Iowa.
I’m starting to search for my best fit for playing college baseball. I’m interested in <NAME OF COLLEGE> for a few reasons:
REASON 1
REASON 2
REASON 3
Will you look at the short video on my recruiting profile (linked below) and let me know if my skillset and metrics match what you’re looking for?
<PROFILE LINK>
Here is a snapshot of my credentials:
Height/Weight = 6’1”/185
Experience = 18 varsity innings as a sophomore at Pleasant Valley (largest classification in Iowa)
Velocity = 82-87
Pitches = FB/CB/CH
Stats = 25 strikeouts in 18 innings as a sophomore
If you have some initial interest, can we schedule a phone call so I can learn more about your program?
Thank you for your time and consideration!
Sincerely,
John Smith

Advisor Contacts
If players STILL aren’t getting responses from their top schools, we reach out to the coaching staff as CAA advisors.
We can’t force coaches to recruit players, but we WILL work hard to determine if there is mutual interest.
We also proactively make contacts via email, text, and phone to help our players gain options.
In the past week before writing this article:
I’ve sent more than 20 text messages to college coaches
I’ve made 6 phone calls to college coaches
I’ve sent more than 100 emails to college coaches
The purpose of these contacts was to promote players I’m currently working with.
CAA Network
Our players have ONE advisor who is their point person, BUT they benefit from the connections of ALL our advisors.
We are ONE team at CAA and we all help each other out.
We are all former college coaches/players and collectively have more than 1000 college coach connections nationwide.
This number is growing every week as well.
I a player’s main advisor doesn’t have a connection with a coach at a school of interest for one of his players, it’s likely another advisor does.
Here’s an example:
I worked with a player from the Midwest a couple years ago.
He wanted to play in better weather, so we sent company emails to southern schools.
I also had our advisors in the south send his information to their personal connections.
He ended up at a JC in the south due to one of these connections.
This is just one of many examples like this in the 5+ years CAA has existed.
We promote our players on social media, but more importantly we coach our players about how best to use social media for themselves.
X (formerly Twitter) has become an outstanding recruiting tool.
I talked to a D1 coach recently who told me that X is his MOST effective recruiting tool.
Here’s an article I wrote about how players can use X to gain options for playing college baseball.
Coaches App
We’ve recently launched an app for college coaches.
Within the app, coaches can:
Filter players based on their needs (i.e., position, grad year, metrics, etc.)
Access player profiles
Access player videos
We’ve received positive feedback from the coaches who have used it so far.
As more coaches learn about this brand new feature, it will become an outstanding resource for college coaches.
Website
We feature information about our players on our website.
And now that we’ve launched our coaches app, college coaches can access the app through our website as well as from their mobile devices.
This hasn’t been a common way coaches have found our players in the past, but it’s usage will undoubtedly increase with the new coaches app.
Thank you for reading! Here is a summary of the seven ways we promote our players to college coaches:
Company Emails
Personal Emails
